If you start with directories, the html and page coding frequently does not directly affect your listing. Directories often supply much more targeted results than search engines. A search for the directory site looks for matches only within the descriptions submitted but not the information found on your web pages. What count is the impression that the site makes on the editor, the words he or she chooses to use, information in the submission form, etc.

A short description and the URL to the website are submitted to the directory. If it is approved, the search directory then assigns the website to an appropriate category or within the big search website Based on information put together by human editors; these editors decide which sites to list, and, to which categories. Directories are created by people who actually create the website's listing on the search page, as opposed to a 'robot' or 'spider' to do this automatically.

Your Directories work similar to search engines in the sense that they read the information on each distinct URL and rank them according to unique logarithms set up by the individual catalogs. The major differences are follows.

Directories often default to categories prior to providing individual web pages or web sites, therefore the category your site is listed in is often as important as the key words and title.

Directories often have a fewer number of URL's from each site to select from. This means typically that if a certain site has quality information for a certain search, but this is not apparent from the home page, some of the best pages may be omitted. However, today most directories have joint venture with search engines and vice versa to minimize this affect.

Directories are different from Search Engines in that they do not spider pages. Humans review each submission, visit each site, and decide what gets in.

Search engines and directories provide search results for each other. If a search turns up nothing in the directory's database of sites, it will show the search results from one of the spidered engines. All the directories use one of the major engines.

The reverse is also true. Most Search Engines also provide directory results, in addition to their own search results.

Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a director. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed than a poor site.
