Solo Professional Can You Answer This Question - What Business Are You In?

Posted on November 11, 2008 - Filed Under Business |

Each day thousands of solo professionals are asked this simple question: What business are you in? The replies are many, but usually the standard ones include insurance, manufacturing, real estate or financial services.

Many solo professionals started their careers in corporate America. These origins may help to perpetuate the standard response to the question what business are you in because many companies fail to considered their employees as part of their success. For these companies, the focus is the results of the efforts of their human capital and not the actual individuals producing those results.

Jack Welch the retired CEO and President of General Electric( GE) said in an interview in the spring of 2001 that he was in the people development business. He understood by developing the innate potential within each employee that GE would benefit with greater creativity and maximum productivity.

As a solo professional, you must also be in the people development business. You must continue to develop yourself if you want to survive and more importantly thrive in today’s highly competitive marketplace. The following suggestions may help you to become a better developer of yourself:

  1. Schedule time to develop yourself. Put together a personal and professional development plan. Each year I attend at least 4 conferences and participate in at least one teleconference each month.
  2. Establish some core values that are non-negotiable. In simple word, you need to walk the talk all the time.
  3. Ask yourself, would you hire you? Assess the necessary skill levels to reach success
  4. Make sure your own work environment supports a culture of high performance. For example, are you organized?
  5. Set W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. goals within your action plan to keep you moving forward and demonstrating maximum productivity

Remember, no matter what business that you are in as a solo professional, you are first and foremost in the people business.
