When do you give up on your dream and let it die peacefully? The answer is Never! Although that isn’t always the answer you’ll get from marketing gurus with a defiant set of values and support.

After a rather uneventful meeting, I talked with one member who was quite disgruntled. She wanted more from the organization that it was giving her, and I took a long hard look at the input she was giving back to the group. She wanted something out of the group that she wasn’t willing to put into it.

Then I looked around and realized that is the course of many businesses. They want more from their business than they are willing to put into them.

Are you deadbeat marketing?

A deadbeat marketer has specific characteristics that keep him standing out in the crowd.

1. Deadbeat Marketers fertilize the egg.

A deadbeat marketer gave it all once back there at some point in history and now the job is done. Nothing more is required because the business carries the DNA and BRAND of the Deadbeat Marketer from one enjoyable romp in the idea bank.

2. Deadbeat Marketers throw money at the object of their implantation for a short time.

For a little while, a deadbeat marketer will toss money or energy toward the project until the cuteness wears off. When the business begins to lack the luster and new baby smell, the deadbeat marketer begins to thrust his energy elsewhere, hoping for a new idea.

3. Deadbeat Marketers threaten and attempt to coerce continuum.

Once the new has worn off, the deadbeat marketer tosses a coin or a ball into the rink now and then, but ceases to actively participate in responsive action. When all else fails the deadbeat marketer will threaten the market with a lunging attempt at discounts and super sales, falling just short of bribing buying customers to collect his wares.

4. Deadbeat Marketers make up for their lack of enthusiasm with erratic splurges.

Lacking consistency, the deadbeat marketer will spring into erratic action tossing a few odd ball attempts at improvement into the mix on holidays and special events. Just in time for the first snow of autumn, the deadbeat marketer will order in snow shovels that arrive after everyone has theirs.

5. Deadbeat Marketers retain bragging rights long after they’ve disowned their business.

Actual accomplishments mean nothing to the deadbeat marketer. Their view is kept clear by bragging over the few miraculous achievements their business managed to encounter over time and life of the dying breed. Once the business is gone, the deadbeat marketer hangs onto the fact they owned it as if ownership meant something special.

Are you a deadbeat marketer? Do your sales lag behind the norm, and yet you stand back and wonder why?
